Recruitment of project and change professionals was busy throughout the year. In fact, one of the most surprising aspects was the lack of the seasonal slowdown that we saw in previous years. There is clearly an increased sense of urgency behind recruitment as more projects are given the go-ahead, and this has translated into a greater degree of flexibility on requirements.
The shortage of local talent is also driving up the demand for candidates from overseas countries where the market is more mature. There is still regulatory pressure on companies to identify local talent where possible, but any candidate from abroad who has solid regulatory change management experience will not have difficulty finding a role. We also saw an increasing demand for female candidates, driven both by positive action to redress the gender imbalance and the need to expand the talent pool.
The project and change market is now split evenly between permanent and contract; the contract market continues to develop and more and more professionals are open to this option. Hiring organisations still face budgetary pressures and it is easier to appoint an overseas candidate to a temporary or interim role than to make a permanent hire. In particular, if a project is an urgent priority, contract hires are often a quicker solution.
We expect to see salaries continue to increase steadily in 2016, though hiring organisations will resist significant hikes in basic salaries. Instead, we will see greater focus on the total compensation package. Junior staff can probably expect the largest base salary increases as there is a lack of talent at lower levels and pressure to reduce salary inflation at more senior levels.
There may be fewer openings at leadership level as many organisations are trying to minimise complex structures. As a result, project and change leaders may need to adjust their expectations of further salary growth.
